If you've been following me for any length of time, you know that I will ALWAYS find TIME to RHYME in my classroom! I am here today to share the way that I am doing that this winter!
USING POETRY WITH PRIMARY GRADE STUDENTS
FOUR WEEKS OF THEMATIC LESSONS
A few years ago over my December holiday break, I started composing some short, thematic poems for my at-risk readers. My hope was to use them during our Daily 5 partner reading time to build fluency, expression, and confidence. Once I'd written the short verses full of familiar rhyming patterns and sight words, I decided to create a context clue, rhyming, and writing activity for each one.
SNOW POEMS
MITTEN POEMS
When I introduced these activities to my primary grade students, they were a BIG hit! The one-page poems were less intimidating than partner stories and fit our daily time frame. Once I'd modeled each day's directions and expectations, most students were able to work with a peer or individually to complete each task.
I've laid out a sample "lesson plan" using one set of materials from my WINTER POEMS--MITTEN MAGIC pack below. You can see a full preview {HERE}. The product description and preview for my SNOW POEMS pack can be found {HERE}.
