How To Host A Classroom Reading Party!

Happy March, my friends!

Are you celebrating reading in your classroom this week?  Do you need some ideas on how to host a party that is full of learning fun and simple to organize?  Then never fear!  My post is here!

I'm joining Nicole for another great monthly round-up of ideas from our I Teach 2 collaborative, so be sure to hop through the linky below for more from some great teacher-authors!

I've organized my tips into a simple picture tutorial, and included a fun FREEBIE full of materials that are ready for you to just print and use!  My colleagues often tell me that I should be a party planner in my next life!  I love to coordinate colors, decor and lots of fun "extras"  into my classroom learning activities, and am constantly on the lookout for things I can use for my thematic extravaganzas when I am out shopping.  Last summer, I hit the Dr. Seuss jackpot at Dollar Tree and Target, as can be seen here!

The first step in organizing for your reading celebration is to plan an easy snack that your student families can provide supplies for.  I usually just include a list of items needed in my newsletter for the following "Beezlenut Trail Mix" concoction!

My students are encouraged to bring in their favorite Dr. Seuss stories from home to share during Partner Reading and to enjoy during our daily Read To Self periods.  We often invite a 3rd grade class to join us for Buddy Reading at least once during Read Across America Week as well!  What a "joyful noise" we make reading and rhyming together!

Asking a parent volunteer (or even your principal) to dress up as a favorite story character and be a celebrity reader is also a great idea!  Our guest last year also made an appearance in the cafeteria at lunch time to help serve the Cat in the Hat Yogurt Parfaits and Green Eggs and Ham!

Birthday parties would not be complete without party hats and favors!  Just have your students create and write about their own colorful fish using this template by stapling it on to a headband made with either bulletin board border or sentence strips!

Just print these blackline bookmarks on cardstock for your students to cut, color, and give to their Reading Buddy, or print and laminate the colored version as a fun souvenir for them to keep!

Use these opinion writing templates to survey your students' favorite Seuss books and characters, and then have fun creating a class graph using post-its to chart, analyze, and compare/contrast the data gathered!  Mixing up Math and Language Arts is always fun!
