WEDNESDAY WOW MOMENTS!

 CURIOUS FIRSTIES

This afternoon I am delighted to be linking up with my new friend Em from Curious Firsties! Thanks in advance for perusing my professional and personal reflections that are part of my first Wednesday WOW post!

MY PROFESSIONAL REFLECTION....
I am just getting home on this chilly afternoon after working in my classroom  to pull files and literature related to our Social Studies unit on Famous Americans.  Biographies are my "genre of choice" during the months of January and February, and help my second graders learn timeline, non-fiction text features, and compare/contrast skills.

Last week my class explored the lives of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Ruby Bridges.  My students were mesmerized during "Story Corner" when I read books about both of these courageous civil rights advocates, and the high point of our discussion afterwards came when one of my little gals quietly turned to her neighbor and whispered, "If we had lived way back then, we would not have been allowed to be friends.  That would have made me very sad.  I'm glad that we live in this time now...."

If I ever get to return to school tomorrow after this long snow day-induced sabbatical, I plan to read this poetic picture book with my students before asking them to write a letter to Ruby Bridges.  The vibrant illustrations and message of tolerance, acceptance, and diversity splashed on the pages will remind the members of my classroom family that they are all uniquely special and appreciated.

MY PERSONAL REFLECTION...
I have to say that after watching the scary news of yesterday's weather in Atlanta, Virginia, and other southern states that are not accustomed to winter as we know it in the Midwest, I am glad to be safe, warm, and snuggling with my old hound dogs today!  Here are pictures of them--taken with my iPhone and therefore not the best quality-- wrapped up in blankets and very happy to have their beloved Basset Hound Mama home!

TWO WISE AND WRINKLY FACES OF RESCUE PETS
ONLY A MOTHER COULD LOVE!

BRUTUS  (aka "The Beast")

ROSIE  (aka "Miss Sassy Pants")

Know that we three are sending warm woofs and wishes your way today and always!  Both dogs want me to remind you to stop in at my TPT store to scoop  up these two Snow Day Dollar Deals!  Enjoy!

  1. I love your dog pictures! Ahhh! I would want to snuggle them on a cold day :) It has been a crazy set of cold, snowy days. It will be nice to get back into a routine with our students. I am thrilled that you linked up! It was a great post.

    1. Rosie and Brutus are "life partners" that I rescued after my divorce and when my daughter left the "nest" to go to college. I have had them almost three years now. They are quite a stubborn old pair at times, but keep me company and make me smile!

    1. Thanks for the kind compliments, Kylie! They often say that rescue dogs really "rescue" the human that brings them home. That is certainly the case with Brutus and Rose. Their vet bills may be astronomical and their temperament is often ornery, but they are faithful, loyal, and so very goofy that I have to love them dearly!
