Poetry.
Cuteness overload, right?
What better combination of two of my favorite things to help my primary grade students practice reading fluency, recognizing vocabulary context clues, rounding up rhymes,
and writing poems of their own!

HOW TO TEACH FOUR POEMS IN FOUR WEEKS
The lesson schedule or plan I follow when sharing and teaching with each poem follows:
DAY 1--FIRST READ
First, we read the poem as a group and use highlighters to find the rhyming pairs in each verse. Then we break into small groups or partner pairs to re-read with fluency and expression.
DAY 2--SECOND READ AND RHYME TIME
Then students re-read the poem independently or with a partner work before completing the Rounding Up Rhymes worksheet to master reading and recognizing familiar rhyming/spelling patterns.
DAY 3--THIRD READ AND COMPREHENSION/VOCAB PRACTICE
Next, students re-read the poem independently or with a partner to practice fluency and expression. After that, they work independently or with a partner to complete the Context Clue worksheet to build comprehension and vocabulary skills.
DAY 4 --WRITING PERSONAL POEMS
On the fourth day, students can work independently to use the writing template to write their own Personal Poem.
DAY 5--POETRY PUBLISHING PARTY
Once students have completed their Personal Poems, host a publishing party for students who want to share their compositions aloud.
I suggest that you provide students with a Poetry Folder to keep all of the pages for each poem organized during your month-long poetry study! Click {HERE} to download a blackline or color folder label your students can use!
You'll find this complete pack of DOG POEMS {HERE}!
