Fairy Garden Tales

Hello Friends and Royal Fairy Tale Fans!

Greetings from the "Kingdom of Room 2," a place where we are currently immersed in a cross-curricular unit about castles!  My second grade construction crew has been hard at work building towers, turrets, drawbridges, and moats with all sorts of 3-D solids as part of our geometry unit.  Their fascination with castles all started after I shared Doreen Cronin's newest story, Bloom.

Primary grade students will love reading Doreen Cronin's Bloom, and then completing the free companion fluency practice and creative writing activities. Ideas for creating a classroom fairy garden are also included.

CASTLE CONSTRUCTION:  FAIRY-STYLE
This modern-day fairy tale with a twist features a wise yet messy mud pixie, a king and queen whose castle is made of glass, and a young servant girl who proves to be extraordinary, empowered, and intelligent in her efforts to save the kingdom!

Next week, I plan to introduce my little learners to our own classroom fairy, and use her as a springboard for more critical thinking, reading, and creative writing activities.  She'll have her own garden and house (thanks to a delightful sale I discovered at JoAnn Fabrics this morning), and will serve as my magical "co-teacher."

HOW DOES OUR FAIRY GARDEN GROW?
I was inspired to create a fairy home for my classroom (and a few more for my backyard) after reading this {POST} that featured nine different "enchanted gardens."  With my pansies in full bloom and the spring sun shining, I had great fun tucking this wee little lady and her swing next to a small hut shaped like a watering can.  I threw in a toadstool for good measure!  Too cute!

My students absolutely loved when our Kindness Elves came to visit in December, and I they'll get a big kick out of our new visitor, don't you?  I am hoping that they will welcome "Bloom" as the newest member of our classroom community, and bring in little things to add to her space as we countdown the days until summer break.  Maybe she will even write notes and leave them for us?  Note to self:  Find a fairy-sized mailbox!

You'll find a tutorial from Klea on how to make a mud-brick cottage that truly honors the fairy in Bloom {HERE}.  I am not brave enough to try it with a class of 26, but think it would make a great summer project for your own children!  Just round up some egg cartons and mix up some dirt, straw, and water in big tubs to make mud!

FUN FAIRY-THEMED LEARNING ACTIVITIES
In celebration of all things fantasy-related and "mud-licious," I made this complimentary companion activity pack for you to use after sharing the magic of Bloom with your students!  You can find it

As always, thank you for sharing my story!  Continue to hold this favorite Disney song in your heart, and teach your children well!

from Disney's Pinocchio, as sung by Jiminy Cricket

Make learning "sparkly" for your students with a little faith, hope and trust....and of course, a little pixie dust!
