Spring Is Here Poetry Hop

Welcome Poetry Fans!

Thanks so much for stopping by to enjoy the many ideas, products, and freebies from another lovely group of bloggers who love literacy! We have our fearless leader, Carla from Comprehension Connection, to thank for organizing this seasonal blog hop!  We hope that you find what we've shared this weekend to be useful in your classroom as we celebrate April as National Poetry Month!

Spring means studying baby animals AND poetry in the primary classroom! This post provides ideas and resources to help you do both!

Every spring, my second grade "city slickers" used to head out to a farm about 40-miles away from our suburb of Toledo, Ohio to experience life in the country!  Together we would milk a cow, hold baby ducks, feed a baby goat from a bottle, and marvel at a pig the size of Wilbur from Charlotte's Web.   Before we went on our field trip, and again after we came back, we explored barnyard sights and sounds with activities from this fun literacy pack I created!

HOST A BARNYARD HULLABALOO!

No poetry unit in my classroom would be complete without a Reader's Theater activity (or two), and Cock-a-doodle-doo!  Barnyard Hullabaloo by Giles Andreae and David Wojtowycz is a Scholastic book classic that I use every year to help my students build fluency and rhyming skills!  My students love the call-and-response format of the story, and use different animal voices while enjoying repeated readings with a partner.

ROOSTER

Cock-a-doodle-doo!
Cock-a-doodle-doo!
I'm the rockin' rooster, baby,
Tell me, who are you?

CHICKENS
by Giles Andreae
from Barnyard Hullabaloo

We chickens are covered with feathers
All over our wings and our legs,
So of course we could fly
If we wanted to try
But we're too busy laying these eggs.

    1. Thanks so much for your kind comments, Carla! I bought myself a pair of overalls to wear on our trip this year so that I can even look "authentic!" Maybe we will re-write the song and sing "Old Mrs. Reynolds Had A Farm!?" Ha!
